Manufactured in 1963, this is a Rolex Oyster Chronograph Ref. 6238 “Pre-Daytona” featuring an extremely rare grey dial. It is a rare piece fitted with the grey-colored dial seen on early examples of Ref. 6234 and Ref. 6238.
Unlike later tachymeter dials with bar indexes and baton hands, this grey dial retains the 1950s aesthetic with wedge-shaped indexes and alpha hands, beautifully expressing the character of the era along with a superb tonal quality.
Within Ref. 6238, there are examples of tritium dials marked with an underline; however, this particular watch features a radium dial that still retains its original radium luminous material.
It is accompanied by a 1960s Oyster riveted bracelet (dated 2/61), suitable for wrist sizes up to 19 cm. The watch is powered by the Valjoux-based Cal. 72B, derived from the renowned Cal. 72, which was widely used in many manually wound Daytona models.
