Manufactured in the 1960s, this Aquastar “Regate” is a rare early yacht timer powered by the Felsa Cal. 4000N, housed in a waterproof case and featuring a distinctive gray dial.
Founded in 1962 by Frédéric Robert, Aquastar introduced the Regate mechanism, for which it obtained a patent in 1964. This watch represents one of the earliest yacht timers equipped with that groundbreaking regatta countdown system.
The Felsa Cal. 4000N movement incorporates a five-minute countdown mechanism, with the five apertures at the top of the dial gradually changing from red to gray as the countdown progresses. In later years, the system evolved into the Lemania Cal. 1345, featuring a ten-minute countdown. Because this later mechanism was adopted not only by Aquastar but also by brands such as Omega, Lemania, and Heuer, these early Regate yacht timers are regarded as historically significant and highly collectible examples.
The watch also showcases the same case design found on the contemporary Aquastar 60, while its attractive gray sunburst dial highlights the distinctive aesthetic of the first-generation model. Combining innovative mechanics with period design, this piece exemplifies the unique character and charm of Aquastar’s pioneering early Regate watches.
