Manufactured in the 1940s, this Oyster Watch Company “Raleigh” Ref. 3478 features an exceptionally rare black sector dial with a 24-hour display.
Among the highly sought-after sector dials known to collectors as the “Three Fools” (“Sanbaka”) design, this original black dial is particularly uncommon. The addition of a 24-hour scale further enhances the dial’s densely layered and highly technical appearance. The watch also benefits from the symmetry unique to center-seconds models—a rare feature among these sector-dial variants—creating a beautifully balanced design. Combined with its robust Oyster case, which conveys remarkable substance despite the modest 29 mm case size, the watch exudes an outstanding vintage character.
While the “Three Fools” sector dial can also be found on certain Rolex Bubble Back and Flat Back models, examples featuring a 24-hour display have yet to be documented on the market. This makes the present watch an especially noteworthy and unusual piece.
The Oyster Watch Company is renowned for producing watches that combine excellent design and practicality, featuring both dial layouts shared with Rolex and distinctive designs unique to Oyster Watch Company itself. As such, this watch represents a fascinating example of the brand’s creativity and craftsmanship during the golden age of mechanical watchmaking.
