Manufactured in the late 1940s, this Rolex Oyster Bubbleback Ref. 2940 is a stainless steel model featuring a luminous Arabic dial and an exceptionally rare engraved Rolex coronet.
This is a true super rare piece, as it features the engraved coronet design that would later become familiar on 1950s Semi-Bubble, Oyster, and "Killy" models, yet is almost never encountered on the earlier NA-size Bubbleback. While 1950s examples typically feature both an engraved coronet and engraved hour markers, this watch represents an early transitional model in which only the Rolex coronet is engraved, giving it a distinctive appearance unique to the period.
The robust two-piece case, with its integrated bezel and middle case construction, offers a substantial feel on the wrist. Despite its compact 31mm diameter, the Bubbleback's automatic movement provides the model with the unmistakable presence and character for which it is renowned.
Also included is a later genuine Rolex tapered expansion bracelet, suitable for wrist sizes up to approximately 18.5 cm.
